Family tragedy has again befallen actress and singer Jennifer Hudson, whose half-brother was arrested Tuesday following an incident Monday night, police in Michigan confirm to PEOPLE.
Stephen Angelo Simpson, 45, is currently in the Van Buren County jail awaiting arraignment, South Haven police tell PEOPLE. Local CBS affiliate WWMT/Newschannel 3 reports that he was arrested for repeatedly stabbing the boyfriend of his estranged wife.
"I open the door and see blood everywhere," neighbor Torrey Hunt, who aided the victim, told the station. "He was stabbed in his chin and his chest, he had puncture wounds in his chest and his arms and stuff."
The victim was treated and released at the hospital after receiving 20 to 30 stitches, and is expected to recover, according to WWMT.
Police and WWMT also report that Simpson had a history of domestic violence. He was currently on probation, following a Super Bowl Sunday assault of his wife.
In October 2008, Hudson's mother, brother and nephew were fatally shot by William Balfour, the former husband of her sister Julia.
Balfour, described by a Chicago judge as having "the heart of an arctic night," was sentenced in 2012 to three life sentences without parole.
