Downton Abbey suffered a very modern mishap this week after a plastic water bottle turned up on a mantelpiece - but it is not the first to make such a gaffe
It is the most popular historical drama on TV but Downton Abbey suffered a very modern mishap this week after a plastic water bottle turned up on one of the stately home’s mantelpieces.
The promotional shot released by ITV ahead of the fifth series, which is set in 1924, featured the Earl of Grantham and Lady Edith along with a not very aristocratic looking plastic water bottle.
Critics were quick to point out they weren’t invented until the 1960s, much to the producers’ embarrassment.
The hit show has developed a bit of a reputation for historical blunders with eagle-eyed viewers reporting sightings of a television aerial fixed to a home, a modern-style conservatory, and double yellow lines on a road.
But it’s not the only drama to have let an inaccuracy or two slip through the editing process , like these historical howlers.
