BlackBerry Leap launched in Canada Thursday targets touchscreen consumers

Device has five-inch screen and company says battery will last all day even under heavy use

BlackBerry is launching a smartphone in Canada on Thursday called the Leap that foregoes the physical keyboard that was once the company's signature.

The Waterloo-based company says the Leap targets mid-range consumers who want a touchscreen phone, but don't want to pay a premium price for that option, as they would with an iPhone or a Samsung or Nexus product.

The Leap is BlackBerry's first touchscreen-only phone since the company launched the Z30 18 months ago. Since that time, the company has released several keyboard models, including the Passport and the Classic, that have proved popular with the company's hard-core business power users.

The Leap will be free on numerous carriers with a two-year contract, BlackBerry says, but it's suggested retail price is $349 outright. It features a battery that will last more than 24 hours under so-called "heavy" use, a five-inch screen, and 16 gigabytes worth of storage space.
