Lambert says Saints supporters anger should be aimed at the board not the players who quit St Mary's.

Five Southampton stars left this summer after manager Mauricio Pochettino joined Tottenham.
England man Lambert, 32, was the first player to go when he made a £4m move to Liverpool.

He has escaped stick because few begrudged him a move to his boyhood club after firing Southampton to the Premier League.

But Saints fans are fuming with the likes of Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana after they forced their way out to join Liverpool.

Lambert, who made his Reds debut in their 2-1 win over Southampton on Sunday, said: "A few of the players who have left have took a bit of stick and they'll take it, that's football.

"But it's been a bit surprising that it's all been the players and not on the owners.

"There is obviously a reason why the gaffer went and that was the moment when it became clear to the players what the ambition of the club was going to be."
