of another nude. I am, of course, talking about Sharon Osbourne’s
lavatory homage to Kim’s naked selfie. The 63-year-old Talk
co-host posted an almost identical image; front on and stark nude, bar
the rather comical black-out censorship rectangles that also decorate
Kim’s selfie.
While the internet stopped and gave a sort of
passing wave to Sharon’s selfie, at best a kind of ‘u k hun?’ nod toward
the middle-aged ex TV star and continued blindly into the “feminist or
not” furore shrouding Kim’s latest upload, we stopped and looked a
little longer at Sharon’s self-portrait and were struck by a few things.
Firstly; how wonderful that at 63, Sharon posted a picture of
her near-nude form on the internet to, at the very least, her 402k
Instagram followers. How fabulous, that at 63, she feels #liberated by
shooting her own nude, in her own bathroom, with her own iPhone. How
often do we really see older, nude, bodies in everyday life? Not often
enough.
Secondly, I was struck by the marvellous
similarities that Sharon and Kim share. Kim will surely age into a
Sharon Osbourne herself (if a little more famous.) They both claim fame
via marriages to world-famous musicians. Both have starred in reality TV
shows that have centred on their personal lives; their families, their
roles as friends, mothers and as spouses. They became famous for their
refusal to be quiet, demure or anything other than themselves.
Sharon
cursed and fought her way through a house full of bratty, tattted
children, weak-bladdered dogs and mumbling husbands. Kim struggled to
form sentences through her tears, lay on her back with her feet in the
air to increase her chances of getting pregnant and tricked her family
into thinking they’d eaten her placenta for dinner – and we fell in
love. Their respective addictions to plastic surgery have been well
documented. Kim had botox on TV and Sharon has admitted to having a facelift, tummy tuck and breast lift, as well as several other procedures. For as many people as either of them offend, they double the amount of
people they ingratiate with their humanity and honesty. As humans, I’m
convinced that their popularity is in part down to their shared
characteristics of unpretentiousness and pride. I am inspired by their
pride. They are undeniably proud women. They are not famous for their
talents, but rather their relatable humours, struggles and desires.
Of
course, both women have sat for magazine covers, subject to endless
mood lighting, Photoshop retouches and makeup artists and they’ve been
shot near-naked before. Kim’s monochrome nude shot, that she posted two
days ago, by male photographer Brian Bowen Smith came under considerably
less fire than her self-portrait. Is it because it’s a professional,
read subtext: more fashion – caveat – classier nude? Do we, in fact,
have more issue with women using their own mobile devices to frame
themselves than we do with the Terry Richardsons of this world? Maybe.
No
matter how demonised, sexualised, trivialised or idolised both Sharon
and Kim's bodies become online, it is their grip on their own
individualities, values and bodies that make them applaudable. As Kim
wrote in her open letter: “You be you and let me be me. I am a mother. I
am a wife, a sister, a daughter, an entrepreneur and I am allowed to be
sexy.”

Ringleaders John "Kenny" Collins, 75; Daniel Jones, 61; Terry Perkins, 67; and the group's oldest member, Brian Reader, 77, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary last September.
Collins, Jones and Perkins were each given a seven-year prison term.
Jones and Perkins said "Thank you" to the judge as they sat down. The

Carl Wood, 59, and 60-year-old William Lincoln,
of Bethnal Green, east London, were found guilty of the same offence
and one count of and conspiracy to conceal, convert or transfer criminal
property, after trial.
Lincoln was also given a seven-year sentence, and Wood was jailed for six years. Plumber Hugh Doyle,
was found guilty of concealing, converting or transferring criminal
property between January 1 and May 19 last year.He was jailed for 21
months, suspended for two years. Outside court, Doyle told the
Telegraph: "I'm happy and relieved, I just need to catch my breath. I
feel sorry for the victims. Now I'm going to focus on my business and my
family."
Reader, of Dartford, Kent, was also due to be
sentenced. However, after falling ill in Belmarsh prison and suffering a
second stroke, he was not well enough to attend court and will instead

Passing sentence, Judge Christopher Kinch QC, said: "The burglary of
the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit vault in April 2015 has been labelled by
many - including some defendants and advocates in this case - as the
biggest burglary in English legal history.
"Whether that
assertion is capable of proof, I do not know. However, it is clear that
the burglary at the heart of this case stands in a class of its own in
the scale of the ambition, the detail of the planning, the level of
preparation and the organisation of the team carrying it out, and in
terms of the value of the property stolen."

Branding him a ringleader, the judge told John Kenneth Collins: "You
were already 74 years old at the time of the burglary. You were a
ringleader and a lookout during the burglary both nights.
"You
drove the van there and back. You have a long list of previous
conditions dating back to the 1950s and 60s. Until now, this century has
been uneventful.
"You are now 75 years old and like most of
your co-defendants you are coping with a number of illnesses. You are
also dealing with a deal of family sadness.
"You pleaded guilty.
On count one, I take the starting point of 10 years and deduct 30 per

Describing how he "embraced careful need for preparation", the judge
told Daniel Jones: "You were instrumental to opening the vault. You
clearly embraced the careful need for preparation.
"You too have
a long list of previous convictions. You have no convictions in this
century. Your guilty plea was entered in the magistrates court and you
offered to take the police to wear some of the jewellery was buried.
"But the episode tends to suggest you were pragmatic in your approach as more of the stash was later found.

Describing him as being "motivated by an instinct for
self-preservation", Judge Kinch told Wood: "Carl Wood, you had a
background in running and keeping fit, but I am aware you had been
suffering with Crohn's Disease.
You were involved but you were not a ringleader. You were motivated by an instinct for self-preservation.
"In the result, you did not share in the successful completion of the
burglary and were spoken about scornfully by the others. Your withdrawal
cannot lesson your guilt but I consider that it will enable me to alter
the sentence. The sentence on count one will be six years." Carl Wood

Hugh Doyle, 48, of Enfield: suspended prison sentence
Hugh Doyle has been jailed for 21 months, suspended for two years, at
Woolwich Crown Court for his involvement in the £14 million Hatton
Garden jewellery raid.
Hugh Doyle received a prison sentence of 21 months - suspended for two years - for his "limited role".
The judge told him: "You must be sentenced for a money laundering
conviction. I'm satisfied you would have been aware that John Collins
and the others only had interest in that of very expensive property.
"Only a custodial sentence is suitable for your offence. Yours was a
limited role and you were acquitted for the wider role in the burglary.
You do have previous convictions but since your released you have
applied yourself and set up a business in Enfield.
"I have been
impressed by the personal and business references written in your name.
Because of the limited role you performed I've concluded that I can
suspend a sentence of imprisonment. It will be 21 months suspended for

A statement later released on behalf of Doyle read: "We are delighted
that the sentence imposed today by the court will enable Mr Doyle to
focus on his family and on his business.
"We have lodged an application for permission to appeal against his conviction which will be considered in due course."
The maximum sentence for burglary at a non-dwelling
property is ten years and those who plead guilty ought to have a third
knocked off their sentence.
But the prosecution had asked the judge to ignore the sentencing guidelines and impose a longer sentence as two-thirds of the proceeds of the burglary remains outstanding.
Starting his sentencing on Wednesday afternoon, Judge Christopher Kinch
QC said: "I identify this case as involving greater harm than in the
guidelines.
"The loss is on an unprecedented scale. The safety
deposit box company went into administration and its reputation was
never the same again.
"Some of the smaller jewellers were
keeping gold for their retirement. This is among the worst offences of
its type. On count one, I'm satisfied that nothing but the maximum of
the sentencing guidelines would be appropriate." Raiders

Brian Reader, 77,
who was one of the ringleaders of the gang, had been due to be sentenced
alongside the others, but his hearing has been postponed due to ill health.
One of the gang members, dubbed Basil, who played a key role in the raid, has also not been apprehended.
The gang members have claimed Basil was the real architect behind the burglary, but have refused to identify him.

Detective Superintendent Craig Turner, head of the Met's Flying Squad,
said: “This was an audacious burglary in the heart of London's diamond
district.
"The individuals responsible clearly thought they had
got away with it. But thanks to meticulous and dogged detective work,
they hadn't.
"My officers trawled CCTV from hundreds of cameras,
piecing together the gang’s movements over the Bank Holiday weekend and
tracing the white Mercedes which was a critical lead.
"The
surveillance operation which followed linked each of the men to the gang
and the crime, culminating in the arrest phase where four of them were
caught red-handed with the stolen property.”
Only a third of property recovered so far
Mr Turner added: “To date we have recovered just under a third of the
property and much of it has already been returned to the victims. We
have also been responsible for putting all but one of the suspects
behind bars.
"There will be some out there who have sympathy for
these men believing this crime to be a bold heist where no one got
hurt. The truth is these men were career criminals who didn't give a
moments thought for the people they were stealing from.
"For
many of the victims these safety deposit boxes represented their
livelihood. They put their most valuable property into the vault to keep
safe during the bank holiday weekend only to see it cruelly snatched
away."
£20k reward for conviction of mystery 'Basil'
Making an appeal for the only member of the gang who remains
outstanding, Mr Turner said: “The individual known as 'Basil' remains
unknown. We believe he let the group in and possibly disarmed the alarm.
“Basil is still wanted in connection with the burglary and we
would ask anyone who has information as to the identity of 'Basil' or
the whereabouts of the outstanding jewellery to contact police.
"We are offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information leading to
his arrest and conviction and the recovery of the outstanding property.”

Barristers for Perkins and Jones earlier claimed that Basil - the
mysterious redheaded raider who has never been caught - had been the
“architect of the audacious enterprise”, while they were merely the “men
on the ground”.
Mr Rowlands said that while Perkins accepted being a ringleader, he was not the “architect” of the plot.
He told Judge Kinch: “He accepts he was an enthusiastic member of the
team, but not someone who might be described as an architect of this
audacious enterprise.
“Basil had the keys to the building. Basil
was the man who was able to educate the other conspirators of the
workings of Hatton Garden: where the alarms were, what the difficulties
were, how best to go about it and so on.”
Ian Godfrey, representing Jones, also claimed Basil had been the key figure in the Hatton Garden plot.
Following his arrest Jones, had told police he was willing to reveal
where he had hidden his stash as he wanted to “go straight”.
He led detectives to the grave of a relative in a cemetery in Enfield,
north London, where a quantity of jewellery was found. But police had
already discovered an even larger stash of loot in a plot belonging to a

Mr Godfrey said Jones, who had claimed Basil was a corrupt former
police officer, insisted he knew nothing about the second stash in the
graveyard.
He told the court: “His position for the record is
that he was not aware or responsible for the other plot. The man known
as Basil, who has absconded, was aware of the other plot.”
It also emerged that the other main ringleader, Reader, might never be
sentenced for his part in the raid, after his barrister revealed he
could be close to death.
His defence barrister, James Scobie, told the judge Reader had sight
and hearing problems, was suffering from prostate cancer, had recently
had a stroke in prison and was undergoing biopsy tests on a “mass on his
face”

Wolfgang Schäuble makes case for UK’s continued membership as Boris Johnson hits out at ‘agents of fear’
A British decision to leave the European Union would be “poison” for the UK, European and global economies that would last for years, the German finance minister has said.
Wolfgang Schäuble made the case for Britain’s continued membership of a reformed EU as Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, reiterated his belief that the government was using “agents of fear” to undermine a vote for Brexit.
Their comments follow a weekend of acrimonious campaigning from
senior ministers for different sides of the in/out referendum, due to be
held in June.
Schäuble told BBC1’s Andrew Marr Show: “We would have years of the
most difficult negotiations, which would be very difficult for the EU as
well. And for years we would have such insecurity that would be a
poison to the economy in the UK, the European continent and for the
global economy as well.”
In response to a question about Turkey, he said the German government
had major doubts about whether it should become an EU member.
Negotiations would take a long time, and this was “not a worry at the
present time”.
Johnson, who is at the forefront of the campaign to leave the EU,
also appeared on the show. He questioned why John Longworth, the
director general of the BCC, has stepped down from his position.
“It is very sad that someone like John Longworth who shares my view,
who has great experience of British business and industry, should have
paid quite a heavy price it seems from what has happened today for
sharing that optimistic view.
“He has been asked to step down for expressing a passionate,
optimistic view of this country’s chances. Can you imagine the CBI doing
the same to any of its leading figures for arguing that we should stay
in?”.
Downing Street dismissed claims that it put pressure on the BCC to
suspend its leader for claims that the country could have a brighter
future outside the European Union.
No 10 said it was surprised by the views expressed by Longworth and
acknowledged that it speaks to business organisations regularly. But a
statement from Downing Street reiterated claims that “no pressure” was
put on the BCC to suspend Longworth.
The mayor claimed that Longworth had become a victim of “project
fear“ – the label used by leave campaigners to criticise the tactics
used by David Cameron and his allies backing a vote to remain.
A Downing Street spokesman said: “Given that 60% of BCC members say
they want to stay in the EU, No 10 was surprised to see the director
general of the organisation come out for Brexit. We are clear no
pressure was put on the BCC to suspend him. Of course, No 10 talks to
business organisations regularly – but, to be clear, no pressure was
applied. This decision is entirely a matter for the BCC.”
The Sunday Telegraph said a friend of Longworth claimed Downing
Street had “bullied” and been “putting pressure” on BCC board members to
suspend their director general.
Liam Fox, the former defence minister and a prominent leave
campaigner, said he would ask questions in the House Commons about the
government’s contact with the BCC.
The senior Tory told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I think, quite reasonably, I
want an explanation as to what happened and I want to know if any part
of government – not just No 10, any part of government – was involved in
putting pressure on the BCC to drop John Longworth because I think that
is inappropriate and I think if we don’t get enough explanation we’ll
have to get a better one on the floor of the House of Commons.”
Speaking to Marr, Johnson said it was “cobblers” that Cameron would
have to leave office if Britain voted to leave the EU despite
speculation Tory MPs are plotting to oust him in such circumstances. The
London mayor also rejected claims he had decided to back an out vote
for personal ambition rather than because it matched his convictions.
He added: “To the best of my knowledge there is not a single European
leader … who has had to step down after the referendum,” whether it was
on the EU or any other matter.
Johnson used a colourful metaphor to describe the arguments of some
in the remain camp as being negative and small-minded in the face of an
opportunity to leave and restart negotiations with the EU.
“This is like the jailer has accidentally left the door of the jail
open and people can see the sunlit land beyond,” he said. “And everybody
is suddenly wrangling about the terrors of the world outside. Actually
it would be wonderful. It would be a huge weight lifted from British
business.”
However, Johnson distanced himself from Cameron’s claims that article
50 would have to be triggered the day after a vote to leave the EU. “I
don’t believe it would,” he said.
During the interview, Marr criticised Johnson for failing to answer
questions succinctly. “This is not the Boris Johnson Show,” he said.
Johnson, widely seen as a possible challenger to Cameron following the
EU vote, was criticised for his performance by some fellow
Conservatives.
Ruth Davidson, the popular Scottish Tory leader, wrote on Twitter:
“Is it just me or is Boris floundering here? Not sure the
bumble-bluster, kitten-smirk, tangent-bombast routine is cutting
through.”
In a further development, Iain Duncan Smith’s attacks on the remain
camp have been accused of putting off women voters, according to a
cabinet colleague. The work and pensions secretary, a prominent backer
of Brexit, accused the government of producing a “dodgy dossier”
criticising the alternatives to EU membership.
The education secretary, Nicky Morgan, who is campaigning to stay in
the EU, said “aggression” in politics “doesn’t appeal to women”. She
also dismissed the impact that Johnson would have on the referendum
contest following his decision to campaign for a vote to leave the EU on
23 June.
Morgan told the Independent on Sunday: “I had a conversation with
some businesswomen in my constituency. They said, that bloke who talks
about the dodgy dossier – Iain Duncan Smith – they said what kind of language is that? That’s not going to tell us anything about the debate.
“Aggression always appeals to a certain type of person in politics,
but my experience is it doesn’t appeal to women,” she said. “I think,
actually, saying these phrases like ‘dodgy dossiers’ and asking about
‘project fear’ completely misses the point.”
Senior Conservative backbencher David Davis demanded a clear
statement by Downing Street “that the government was not involved in
pressurising the BCC into suspending Mr Longworth”.
“We need to know there was no contact between ministers and their
officials before Friday’s BCC board meeting that took the decision to
suspend its chief. Downing Street has form in this respect. It has
already admitted it made a ‘mistake’ in adding the name of Gen Sir
Michael Rose, the former special forces commander, to a letter from
former military leaders supporting Britain’s continued membership of the
EU.”
The row over Longworth’s position came as Johnson joined with fellow leave supporter, the justice secretary, Michael Gove, in an attempt to undermine the prime minister’s repeated claims that EU membership made the UK stronger and safer.
Gove told the Sunday Times: “I think overall our national security is
strengthened if we are able to make the decisions that we need and the
alliances that we believe in outside the current structures of the of
the European Union.”
He claimed EU judges had taken decisions against the UK’s national
interests by dictating “what our spies can do and whether we can be kept
safe”.
Gove added: “Our security and sovereignty stand together. I believe
that there are better opportunities to keep people safe if we are
outside the European Union.”
Proposals for a deal between Europe and
Turkey on dealing with the migration crisis have hit their first
obstacle, with a veto from Hungary.
Sky News understands the latest draft proposal says that
Turkey will take back all irregular migrants who arrive in Greece from a
certain yet-to-be-determined date.
The second part of the deal would see the EU admitting
genuine refugees on a one-for-one basis: every irregular migrant Turkey
takes back will mean that the EU will accept a refugee.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu earlier told the
talks in Brussels: "With these new proposals we aim to rescue refugees,
discourage those who misuse and exploit their situation and find a new
era in Turkey-EU relations."
In exchange, would get €6bn (£4.6bn) to help Syrian refugees
stay in Turkey, faster visa-free travel for its citizens and renewed
talks aimed at granting its membership of the 28-country bloc.

But on Monday evening, a Hungarian Government spokesman said their prime minister Viktor Orbán had refused to support them.
The leaders are understood to be unable to agree on the
proposals but are prepared to work on them over the coming days,
according to an EU official quoted by Reuters news agency.
Sky News Europe Correspondent Mark Stone said: "It appears
that the Turkish prime minister, on behalf of his president, has come to
Brussels today to drive a particularly hard bargain.

"In practise, it's hardly very achievable with the current
number of arrivals. But it's a neat way of sending a message to migrants
and refugees not to come."
Stone said Turkey wants to use the money to improve conditions for refugees remaining in the country.
"If it can get that money from the EU then the result of
that will be to stem the flow, because these people will be happy to
remain in Turkey, instead of coming to Europe.
"Turkey is asking for an awful lot and, for now at least, it's something the EU cannot agree on."
